Pete started his publishing career outside of Boston in 1985 as a copy editor for a technology trade paper published by PCW Communications. After a year on the copy desk he took a position as staff reporter. A year later, when the magazine ceased publication, Pete finished his masters degree in English at the University of Massachusetts / Boston, where he was granted the Alvin Ryan prize for his thesis presentation on writing and the creative process.

After graduation, Pete moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. During the next year he wrote technical documentation for a local software company, wrote freelance magazine and newspaper articles for several different publications, and tutored learning disabled children ages 6-16 in reading and writing. In 1988 he took a position as a staff editor for COMPUTE! magazine, in Greensboro, North Carolina, then moved to editor-in-chief in 1989.

In 1991 Pete left COMPUTE! to resume his freelance writing career.
